Layer Cakes aren't just for Birthdays

Let's face it, moms are one of our biggest sources of inspiration in the kitchen. Stay-at-home moms often baked homemade treats in family kitchens in the 60's and 70's. Cakes and more so layer cakes were one of the most common kitchen creations back then. Younger siblings would help mom measure ingredients and lick the spoons after the batter was hand-stirred. Older kids would rush in the door after school to see what mom made during the afternoons she spent at home. After dinner everyone chipped in taking their dishes to the sink, some washed, the other dried them. They made fast work of it knowing mom's delicious dessert awaited them! Gathering again at the table, anxious kids fidgeted as slices were cut and plated. The perfect end to a school day before bath time; sinking the long edge of your fork down the layer and encountering sweet icing along the way. Each forkful was a perfect pairing of both. Each was a gift from a home-making mom who took time from her day in a slower paced world, in a quiet home kitchen, during much simpler days of times gone by.
